What's the Difference Between Pilates and Yoga?

Yoga and pilates are both very popular forms of exercise that both have benefits for both the mind and body. However, it can be easy to confuse the two for each other: both yoga and pilates use an exercise mat, for example, are offered at many gyms, and can help you get into your desired shape and mental state. Both of them are great exercise routines for stress relief and muscle toning. But which would be better for you, and what exactly is the difference between yoga and pilates?

Pilates

Pilates is a relatively new exercise program, as it was developed in the 1920’s. It was originally designed to help with physical therapy and rehabilitation purposes, and the central ideas behind pilates are to help strengthen and tone muscles and your body’s core. Some exercises in Pilates is performed on a mat, while others use exercise machines and other equipment, such as resistance bands and medicine balls. Pilates is perfect for tense muscles and can work wonders for relaxing tight muscles and joints. Pilates, however, is not typically a “spiritual” exercise routine quite the way that yoga is. For example, Pilates does not use breathing techniques the same way that yoga does. Rather, proper breathing is exercised not to reduce stress, but to help the correct amount of oxygen make its way to your muscles while exercising.

Yoga

Like Pilates, yoga is a great exercise program for toning muscles, helping with posture, and teaching you better breathing techniques. Yoga exercises are done on a yoga mat and are done to stretch muscles and relax, and they are done so in a repetitive way that can actually induce a meditative state when paired with steady, rhythmic breathing. In fact, many people who practice yoga on a regular basis do so with the intention of entering a relaxed, meditative state, and yoga is often thought of as a spiritual practice among many. While Pilates focuses on your physical health and healing, yoga focuses on the mental and spiritual aspects of your overall health as well as the physical, making it a more complete experience.

Which to Try, Yoga or Pilates?

Many people who swear by yoga or pilates have tried them both, while others know right away that they are not interested in a certain program. For example, if someone is looking for a way to reduce stress and relax after a long day at work, they might try yoga; not only is it relaxing, but the breathing exercises can also help you wind down and get ready for the day’s end. Many people even choose to use both yoga and Pilates in their workout routines, alternating the two or doing a few workouts from each program each month. They are both great for helping tone muscles in legs, arms, and abdomen areas.

Yoga and Pilates have both similarities and differences. If you are looking for a fitness program that is right for you, try them both. Research them in-depth by picking up a DVD of each and following along, or go to a gym and try out classes to see which one feels more right for you.
