- Distraction during meal periods: you might think work is more important than your meals, but it really isn’t.
- Unavailable meals: it’s often considered as the main reason for skipping meals; you simply don’t have them at hand.
- Lack of a schedule: if you don’t have your meals planned out, there’s a good chance you’ll end up skipping them.

So, you’re feeling a little identified now? Good! Because it’s time to know what are the real effects of skipping meals. And yes, they are incredibly bad. As you know, you need nourishment to work. When you skip meals, you deprive your body of them. Furthermore, you make your chemical balance go haywire. Don’t you believe me? Well, here I list down some of the consequences of missing your meals.
Bad nutrition: when you deprive your body of nutrients, it forces it to consume its reservoirs. This makes your chemical balance change, and it leads to bad nutrition. Why? Most of the times, you’re not replacing the nutrients you’re consuming.
Sugar fluctuation: sugar levels are stabilized throughout the day by eating. The lack of consumption of sources of sugar in the times necessary (between 3 to 4 hours, tops).
Cravings: you know what happens when you don’t have sugar or nutrients? You crave them. The cravings are the most patent consequence of not following your meal schedule.
Bad mood: yes, you get cranky. And it’s a direct consequence of the lack of nutrients. Your body needs food to function, and if you deprive it of it, you have a bad mood. It doesn’t have the energy to function, thus making you more irritable and prone to outburst.
Tiredness: food is the fuel of our body. When you don’t add enough to your tank, you’re likely to get stuck. Tiredness and lack of energy are a direct result of a prolonged habit of skipping meals. This happens because you simply don’t have the sources of energy to face the challenges of your daily habits.

Now, what can you do to avoid skipping meals? Simple: you prepare! There are healthy snacks you can squeeze between big meals. And you can learn how to do meal prep, in order to have alternatives ready to eat. This is one of the best ways to fight off the impulse to skip them! Besides, it’s also a good idea to place alerts on your electronics. Your phone, agenda or email can be your best friends when it comes to alerting you of your much needed time off.
Devote some time to experiencing your meals; it’s completely worth it! You need to focus on your meals, on your plate and what you’re about to eat. This means that everything gets off your mind during those times. Are you short on time or love multitasking? I’m sure that you can set aside at least half an hour to sit down and really experience food. It’s going to help your organism in many ways, more than just nutritionally! You’ll be sharper and more efficient after the short break, and you’ll also have more energy. Are you simply snacking? Then set aside 15 minutes.
